Stranger In The House #2

There’s a stranger in my house

Behind me in the mirror

He looks like me ten years or so from now

He’s staring back at me

There’s panic in his eyes

A deep and cratered furrow in his brow

He seems to know my name

He crawls inside my sleeping

He’s with me every moment I’m awake

Oh promise me son

Not to do the things I’ve done

It seems to me a strange old point of view

The voice it sounds familiar

And I’ve used those words myself

But who the hell do I think I’m talking to?

This stranger seems to know me

He seems to know me well

Reminds me of my father in some ways

I can’t say he’s a friend

But he’ll be there at the end

He’s with me all the intervening days

Oh promise me son

Not to do the things I’ve done

It seems to me a strange old point of view

The voice it sounds familiar

And I’ve used those words myself

But who the hell do I think I’m talking to?

There’s a sadness in that face

I almost recognise

It speaks of joy but mostly of regret

The earth is getting nearer

There’s echoes in the hallway

The shadows lurk but I ain’t seen ‘em yet

Oh promise me son

Not to do the things I’ve done

It seems to me a strange old point of view

The voice it sounds familiar

And I’ve used those words myself

But who the hell do I think I’m talking to?

Oh who the hell do I think I’m talking to?
